5 earrings
Based on the picture shown, you can see one pair of earrings for each color. You don't really need to pay attention to the part where it says "There are 4 pairs of blue earrings, 3 pairs of purple earrings" and so on.
The answer is 5 earrings because if you take one earring from each pair (you don't need to see the colors) which is 4, plus an extra earring (so you're guaranteed to get a pair of earrings of the same color) which is 5 earrings in total.
Even if the first four earrings you pick are all different colors, she will get a matching pair when Jane picks the 5th earring.
The question is invalid. The only real answer is all of them which is 34.
How could it possibly be 5? She doesn’t know which one is selected first.
She picks a blue earring… there are 6 purple earrings left. She can’t see and the rings are unordered by the very premise of the question.
She picks 4 more rings. All are purple. She has 1 blue ring and 4 purple. Yeah the answer is 5 if you could SEE to verify the selection which you can’t
Jane's got earrings in four colors. If she grabs one of each color, that's four earrings. But to make sure she's got a pair, she'd need to grab one more. So, she needs to pick up 5 earrings to guarantee a matching pair.
5 earrings: There is no left and right earring; even if Jane picks four different colored earrings, the fifth will definitely be a match because the shapes are all the same.

It's unclear whether these earrings begin randomly strewn about her bedside table or neatly in their pairs.

Yes Jane won't know which matching pair she has, but she will have a matching pair.

It's wrong. The answer is 30.
