I wish there were explanations to look at after failing to give the correct answer... I still don't understand why the answer here is 38 and not 49. If anyone sees this, can you please help me understand?

The top book is placed face down and therefore none of the 12 pages count towards the total.
'Between' excludes the last page of the blue book.
There are therefore 38 pages (20+18), between the first page of the top book and the last page of the bottom book.
