The sides of the matches don't form the sides of the square as you first assume.
The ends do.
Originally all matchstick ends were at right angles to each other, apart from the left one.
The left matchstick must be moved to the left, to create a perfect square.
graphics make it a bit obvious..
square is created when you move the left matchstick towards the left..
left one looks shorter
