Deepak, your answer would not be correct because the way that you are suggesting would create a rectangle in the center not a square. The answer required the not to be 3 "boxes", but 3 squares.
Removed the top two on the right, and the second from right on the second row. That creates 3 squares too, however it leaves an empty box shape also. Not sure if it counts as correct.

took me some time to figure this out, nice question
