Tips and tricks for calculations involving addition.
First add the easier numbers and follow up with the remainders.
Example: 945 + 542
Start by adding '500' to '945' (instead of '542').
945 + 500 = 1,445
Omit '2' from the remaining '42'.
1,445 + 40 = 1,485
Add back the '2'.
1,485 + 2 = 1487
Example: 55 + 94
First add the tens digits to get 14.
5+9=14
Then chose either of the two units digits to affix to the right.
145
Now add the other units digit.
145+4=149
Avoid carry-over between digits by rounding-off numbers.
Example: 69 + 57
Round-off both numbers to the nearest tens digit.
70+60=130
Now use subtraction to correct:
'One' for the first number, and 'three' for the second number, for a total of minus 'four'.
130-4=126
